How the inflation calculator works

The Consumer Price Index tracks the price of a typical basket of goods and services: food, housing, transport, healthcare and more. When the index rises from 100 to 150, the same basket costs 50% more. The calculator applies that same change to your amount:

Value in the later year = amount × (CPI of later year ÷ CPI of earlier year)

The average yearly rate is the steady annual increase that would produce the same cumulative change, the same way an interest rate compounds. It is useful for comparing periods of different lengths.

US inflation rate by year

Change in the annual average CPI-U from the previous year. Since 1913, the highest annual rate was 17.8% in 1917 and the lowest was -10.9% in 1921, during deflation.

What inflation does to savings

Cash that earns no interest loses buying power every year prices rise. At 3% inflation, prices double in about 24 years, so $10,000 kept in cash would buy only half as much. To keep up, savings need to earn at least the inflation rate after tax.

Frequently asked questions

How is inflation calculated?

Divide the Consumer Price Index (CPI) of the later date by the CPI of the earlier date, then multiply by the amount. For example, $100 × (CPI today ÷ CPI in 2000). The percentage change in the CPI between the two dates is the cumulative inflation.

Where does the data come from?

The calculator uses the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U), published monthly by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, covering 1913 to September 2026. Years use the annual average; "today" uses the latest published month.

What is $1 from 1913 worth today?

About $34.09 in September 2026, because prices have risen roughly 34-fold since 1913.

Why is there no figure for October 2025?

The Bureau of Labor Statistics did not publish a CPI for October 2025 because data collection stopped during the federal government shutdown. The 2025 annual average is calculated from the eleven months that were published.

Does this work for other countries?

No. CPI-U measures prices paid by urban consumers in the United States, so results are for US dollars only. Other countries publish their own price indexes.
