Minecraft Pixel Art Generator

Pick an image and get a Minecraft block plan: a grid you can build from, the exact blocks to use, and how many stacks you need. Your image stays on your device.

Blocks to use

How to use the Minecraft pixel art generator

  1. Choose an image or drop one on the box. Simple images with bold shapes and few colors give the cleanest builds.
  2. Set the width in blocks. The height follows your image, so a square image stays square.
  3. Pick the block types you have, or want to collect. Concrete, wool and terracotta are on by default.
  4. Try dithering for photos; leave it off for sprites and logos.
  5. Download the build plan and materials list, gather the blocks, and build row by row from the bottom. Hover over the preview to check a block, or click a block in the list to see everywhere it goes.

How the color matching works

Every block color comes from Minecraft itself. A script downloads the official Minecraft: Java Edition 26.3 client from Mojang, keeps the 130 full blocks that show the same solid, non-animated texture on all six faces, and averages each texture's pixels. The average is taken in linear light, not raw RGB values, so it's closer to how the block looks from a distance.

Your image is scaled to the size you chose, and each pixel gets the block whose color looks closest. Closeness is measured with CIEDE2000, the CIE's standard formula for how different two colors look (ISO/CIE 11664-6). It weighs lightness, saturation and hue separately, so a dark green pixel gets green wool instead of the lime concrete that a plain CIELAB distance picks. Pixels that are more than half transparent are left empty.

With dithering on, the generator uses Floyd–Steinberg error diffusion: the difference between a pixel and its block is passed on to the neighboring pixels, so areas mix two or more blocks to suggest a shade in between. Everything runs in your browser; the image is never uploaded.

Concrete, wool and terracotta colors

The average color of each of the 16 dye colors, as used by the generator (Minecraft 26.3). Plain, undyed terracotta is #985E44.

Frequently asked questions

Which blocks are best for Minecraft pixel art?

Concrete is the usual first choice: its 16 colors are flat and bright, so a build looks like the image. Wool has the same 16 colors with a soft texture, and terracotta adds muted, earthy tones. Turning on all three gives the closest match to most images.

How big should my Minecraft pixel art be?

Start with 32 or 64 blocks wide. At 64 × 64 a solid image needs 4,096 blocks, which is 64 stacks. Doubling the width roughly quadruples the blocks, so a 128-wide build needs about four times as many as a 64-wide one of the same shape.

Should I turn on dithering?

Turn it on for photos and smooth gradients, and leave it off for logos, sprites and flat artwork. Dithering mixes nearby block colors to fake shades the palette doesn't have, which looks better from a distance but usually needs more block types and takes longer to build.

Can I download a schematic for WorldEdit or Litematica?

No. The generator gives you a PNG build plan with a grid and a CSV materials list, which is enough to build by hand in survival. It doesn't export .schem, .litematic or .nbt files yet.

Why does my build look different from the preview?

The preview shows each block as a flat average of its texture, while the game shows the full texture with lighting and shadows. Wool and stone have more visible texture than concrete, so they look busier in game than in the preview.
