Click the box (or Tab to it) first. Holding Space down counts once: release it between presses.

How to use the spacebar clicker

  1. Pick a test length from 1 to 100 seconds. The default is 5.
  2. Click the box, or press Tab until it's highlighted. The box needs focus to hear your keyboard.
  3. Press Space. Your first press starts the timer and counts.
  4. Keep tapping Space until the bar along the bottom fills up. Release the key between presses.
  5. Read your presses per second. A new best is saved for that test length.

How the spacebar test works

The test counts each time Space goes down while the box has focus. Hold a key and your computer starts repeating it after a short delay. Browsers mark those repeats, and the test skips them, so only real presses count.

It also blocks the two things Space normally does in a browser: scrolling the page and pressing the focused button. Your score is presses divided by seconds, timed with performance.now(). Presses after the time is up don't count. Best scores stay in your browser on this device.

Frequently asked questions

Why doesn't holding the spacebar count?

Holding a key makes your computer repeat it automatically, and those repeats would count as presses you never made. The test ignores repeated key events, so you have to release Space between presses.

Why doesn't the page scroll when I press Space?

While the test box has focus, the test stops Space from scrolling the page. Click outside the box or press Tab to move focus away, and Space scrolls as normal again.

How is the spacebar score calculated?

Your score is spacebar presses divided by the test length in seconds. For example, 60 presses in a 10-second test is 6 presses per second.

Does the spacebar clicker work on a phone?

Not with the on-screen keyboard. Phones only show it for text fields, and this test isn't one. A Bluetooth or USB keyboard connected to your phone or tablet works.

Why are some presses missing?

Presses only count while the test box has focus, so a click elsewhere stops the count. If presses go missing while the box has focus, test the key with the Keyboard Test to see if it registers every press.
